Be CALM Program – Modules 1–4

This year, Cab Tech  students will be engaging in the Be CALM program via their seminar class, a social-emotional learning curriculum designed to help students manage stress, strengthen communication skills, and develop healthy conflict-resolution strategies.

Module 1: C is for COOL
Students learn how to manage stress and strong emotions through mindfulness. A key strategy is “Press the Pause and Breathe,” which encourages students to pause and take three deep breaths when feeling overwhelmed. They also explore concepts such as:

  • Mindfulness and how it supports goal achievement

  • “Flip Your Lid” (understanding how stress impacts the brain)

  • Tuning In to thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations

  • “Name It to Tame It” (identifying emotions to reduce their intensity)

Module 2: A is for ATTENTIVE
Students practice tuning into the present moment and developing mindful communication skills. This includes:

  • Listening with full attention

  • Showing genuine interest in others

  • Acknowledging others’ feelings and perspectives

  • Listening to understand rather than respond

These skills strengthen relationships and collaboration in both school and future workplaces.

Module 3: L is for LOGICAL
Students build self-awareness and decision-making skills by:

  • Clarifying personal values and strengths

  • Using positive self-talk to build confidence

  • Understanding different perspectives (“frame of reference”)

  • Practicing curiosity to reduce judgment and increase empathy

Module 4: M is for MATURE
In this final module, students apply all CALM skills to conflict resolution. They learn to:

  • Pause and respond calmly

  • Use “I-statements”

  • Validate and reflect others’ perspectives

  • Choose respectful, solution-focused outcomes

  • Recognize when to seek support

Students also explore how conflict can be internal and why maturity is needed to resolve challenges in healthy ways.

Through the Be CALM program, students are developing essential 21st-century skills that support academic success, emotional well-being, and positive relationships. We encourage families to ask their students about what they’re learning and practice these strategies at home.
